MUSIC
Music is an indispensable part of the child-centered curriculum as one of the ranges of intelligences and as a special way of knowing, learning, and communicating. Musical activity challenges the child to act in unique ways, listen discerningly to his/her music and the music of others, sing, play or read sensitively and accurately, and evaluate critically. In posing these challenges, music contributes to the development of artistic awareness, self-expression, self-growth and direction, self-esteem, and multicultural sensitivity. Acquiring these important skills will prepare students to succeed in the global and multicultural society of the 21st century.
The musical experience also contributes to the personal, social, mental and physical development of the child. Co-ordination of mind and body is achieved through singing action songs, playing singing games, tapping rhythms, moving to music, playing instruments in time while simultaneously listening to others, and following directions or reading from notation.
The music program will provide age- appropriate opportunities, so that students of each level may develop a positive attitude toward different musical experiences. At the primary level, general music class will exist to expose students to elements of rhythm, pitch, tone, color, texture, melody, harmony, form, style, music terminology, solfege, and basic notation. Fourth and Fifth graders are required to learn the recorders in preparation for instrumental ensemble playing.
Music, as a subject, will combine all the above-mentioned so as to create a cohesive experience where students can feel confident to grow their unlimited talents.
